The Wellsboro Gridders Club has announced their meeting dates for the 2012 calendar year. All meetings will be held at the Wellsboro Community Center from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
The Hornets boys basketball team got 19 points from Jordan Jackson to beat Bellefonte in the Booster Club Holiday Tournament Championship game. Matt Reese had 11 points, Sam Mitchell and Joey Doganiero had six points each for Wellsboro, and Michael Pietropola and Ben Shaw had three points each.
A day after downing Troy to open the Wellsboro Hornets Sports Booster Club Holiday Tournament, the Green Hornet girls basketball team fall to Sayre in the championship game, 42-24. Mikayla Palmer-Bacon was high scorer with 10 points and 4 rebounds and Mackenzie Marple scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The Lady Hornets kept the game close throughout the first half, but couldn't close the widening gap through the third and fourth quarters.
The Hornets used a big second quarter to run to secure a win over the Panthers in the first round of the boys' Wellsboro Christmas Tournament Wednesday.
In first round action of the Wellsboro Holiday Basketball Tournament, both the JV and Varsity Lady Hornets came away the victors.
The Hornets took fourth place at the annual Mount Carmel tournament Saturday afternoon. Junior Josh Kennedy took second, Junior Eli Kennedy was third, and Junior Adam Cleveland (113) finished fourth in individual action.
A balanced team effort lifted the Lady Hornet Varsity team over the North Penn Lady Panthers, 51-26. Leading the way for the Lady Hornets was Co-captain Mackenzie Marple with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Raina Rogers contributed 11 points; Mikayla Palmer-Bacon and Hannah Zuchowski each tossed in 7 points.
Even though Wellsboro gave up 26 points in the 4th quarter they were still able to claim a 55-51 victory over the North Penn Panthers to start league play off with a win. Both teams got off to a very slow start as they only scored 6 points each in the first quarter. Wellsboro was able to take a 28-11 half time lead behind Jordan Jackson's 10 points in the 2nd quarter. The teams played even in the third quarter as they both scored 14 points.
The Canton Warriors defeated Wellsboro 51-23 last night in Canton. Juniors Adam Cleveland, Chad Daugherty, Eli Kennedy, and Sophomore Brandon Owlett all picked up wins for the Hornets. Daugherty, Kenedy, and Owlett all pinned their opponents while Cleveland won by technical fall (16-1).
Despite committing 20 turnovers the Hornets played well enough to upend the Coudersport Falcons Monday night in Wellsboro, 49-38. The Hornets were led by Jordan Jackson (12 points, 5 rebounds), Matt Reese (12 points, 5 rebounds), Dylan Prough (12 points, 6 rebounds) and Joey Doganiero (7 points, 3 rebounds). It was a very physical game but the Hornets never wavered and were able to pull away in the second half by outscoring the Falcons 28-19 to preserve a 49-38 victory.
Seniors Thomas Johnston and Chase Barnes, Junior Ben Shaw, and Freshman Michael Pietropola were recently selected to the Towanda Daily Review All-Region team for the 2011 football season. Johnston was selected as a 2nd team fullback, Barnes was selected as a 3rd team linebacker, Shaw was selected as a 2nd team defensive back, and Pietropola rounds out the selections at 3rd team defensive back.
Trailing 50-47 with only 26 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Wellsboro boys basketball team overcame the hostile South Williamsport crowd and beat the Mounties by the final score of 51-50. After trailing 17-9 after the end of the first quarter, the Hornets rebounded to tie up the score at the half, 25-25.

Head Coach Steve Boyce and the Wellsboro Gridders Club honored the 2011 Senior players this afternoon in Wellsboro. The banquet, which took place at the Masonic Lodge in Wellsboro, featured a nice meal, introductions of each graduating senior by members of the coaching staff, and was capped off by the traditional highlight video.
