Hornets blow out Towanda, 71-41

A 22-point third quarter led the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team to a 71-41 win over Towanda on Tuesday, January 3.

Coming off their second loss of the season last week to Lewisburg, the Hornets started out sluggish in their first game in five days as they had trouble knocking down shots, but eventually a three-pointer from senior Brandon Lamphier got the Hornets rolling for a 12-3 lead after the first quarter.

The Black Knights closed the gap in the second quarter as the Hornets got "foul happy" and cut the Hornets' led to 30-20 at halftime.

That's when junior Dalton Prough took over.

Prough had 9 points when the third quarter started, but exploded for 17 second-half points for a game-high 26. The Hornets broke the game wide open by outscoring Towanda 22-12 in the third quarter and 19-9 in the fourth for the NTL Large School win. Prough's slashing style of play also opened the door for senior Jacob Singer, who scored all of his 7 points in the third.

Lamphier was the team's second-highest scorer with 10 points while adding 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Junior Collin Pietropola had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and a blocked shot, senior Alden Weiner also scored 7 points and had 4 rebounds, sophomore Holden Kennedy had 6, junior Quinn Henry scored 4 points in his first action of the season, junior Nic Ingerick added 2 points, and sophomore Brandyn Tuttle pitched in with 1 point, 4 rebounds, and a blocked shot.

Wellsboro won the JV game 52-21 to improve to 7-1 on the year. Tuttle led all scorers with 27 points.

The Varsity team is now 8-2 (5-0 NTL) with the win. The team will be back in action on Thursday, January 5 as they host rival North Penn-Mansfield in the third annual Margaret (Peg) Berguson Memorial Trophy game.
