The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team pushed their win streak to six game with a 7-0 shutout against Towanda on Thursday, April 27.

The Lady Hornets got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Sophomore Hailey Neal and junior Kailee Clymer both walked to lead off the inning. Freshman Rileigh Gerges doubled in the next at bat to score both Neal and Clymer to put Wellsboro up 2-0. Neal later scored in the fourth after drawing another lead off walk. Neal advanced to third on two wild pitches and Clymer drove her home on a ground out to make it 3-0.

Wellsboro added three more runs in the fifth inning. Junior Alyssa Yungwirth doubled to start the inning and freshman Cathryn Brought reached on error. Yungwirth would score to make it 4-0 and a double by Clymer scored Brought and junior Brianne Keane to make it 6-0. Wellsboro's final run came in the sixth as Keane drove Yungwirth home.

Yungwirth went 2-for-3 with a double and Clymer and Gerges were both 1-for-2 with doubles. Freshman Ryann Adams, Keane, junior Sydney Tremper, and sophomore Heidi Zuchowski added the Lady Hornets' remaining hits. Clymer finished with 3 RBI's, Gerges had 2, and Keane had one.

Yungwirth and Brought both pitched on the night, combining for a one-hitter and 12 strikeouts. Yungwirth went the first five innings, striking out 10 and allowing a hit on 67 pitches. Brought pitched the final two innings, allowing 0 hits and striking out two on 19 pitches.

"Tonight was one of those mid week long bus ride grind em out wins for our girls," said head coach Ron Brought. "They are still improving in every aspect of the game. Base running is becoming a real strength for us as well as patience at the plate. We drew 6 walks tonight while only having 1 strike out. This was also our first game without a defensive error. This was also another win were everyone on the team contributed to our success. Their team play mentality is very rewarding for them."

The Lady Hornets (7-1, 7-1 NTL Large School Division) are on the road at Cowanesque Valley tonight.
