The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team snapped their 4-game losing streak by beating Cowanesque Valley 10-7 on Monday, April 23.

"A big win for the girls tonight," said head coach Ron Brought. "Offensively the girls came through with 13 hits, six extra base hits including 3 HR's. The girls were able to string hits together and put runs on the board in 4 of 6 innings. I was very proud of their effort with 8 members of the lineup getting hits, 4 with a multi-hit game. I also want to congratulate Jena Boyce and Heidi Zuchowski for getting their first career home runs."

It took until the second inning for either team to put runs on the board. CV put two runs up before the Lady Hornets answered back. Senior Kailee Clymer started with a base hit before Boyce homered to tie the game. Junior Hailey Neal then doubled in the next at bat and was brought home on a single by sophomore Ryann Adams to give the Lady Hornets a 3-2 lead.

CV added two more runs in the top of the third to retake the lead by a run, but again the Lady Hornets answered back in the bottom half of the inning.

Freshmen Kerrah Clymer and Chelsie English each got on board then Zuchowski went yard to make it 6-4, Wellsboro. Kerrah Clymer again scored in the bottom of the fourth after she singled on an English double to give Wellsboro a 7-4 lead.

CV added a run in the sixth to cut it to 7-5, but the Lady Hornets added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to put them firmly in control. After two quick outs senior Sydney Tremper and Kerrah Clymer hit back-to-back singles then Engligh hit her home run, the second in as many games, to bring everyone home and push the score to 10-5.

CV added two more runs in the top of the seventh, but Wellsboro held off the attack to pick up the win.

English led the way at the plate for the Lady Hornets, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and nearly hitting for the cycle. Tremper and Kailee Clymer were both 2-for-3 and Kerrah Clymer was 2-for-4. Neal, Adams, Zuchowski, and Boyce added the other hits.

"Kerrah Clymer came through for us in the circle with a complete game for her first career varsity win," Brought continued. "She struck out 5 while holding the CV hitters to only 7 hits."

The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 4-5 (4-3 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action later this afternoon at Sayre.
