The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team got back in the win column as they hung on to beat Towanda 45-37 on Tuesday, January 15.

"Tonight was a good team win," coach Maureen Poirier said. "We are getting more girls in the scoring column which is making a difference offensively. We have one day to get ready for Wyalusing which will be a tough game."

The Lady Knights came out hot with a 12-point quarter and held the Lady Hornets to 8 points and just two field goals. Wellsboro rallied, however, in the second, putting up 14 points in the quarter and while holding Towanda to 6 points and two field goals. At the half Wellsboro held a 22-18 lead.

Both teams struggled finding the bottom of the net once the second half started but Wellsboro managed to edge the Lady Knights 8-7 in the quarter to hold a 5-point, 30-25 lead.

Towanda's fourth quarter comeback fell short as the Lady Hornets outscored them 15-12 behind a 9-point quarter by senior Emma Poirier.

Poirier finished the night with 17 points to lead Wellsboro. Junior Cathryn Brought reached double figures with 10 points, sophomore Jena Boyce had 7, junior Liza Manning finished with 5, senior Heidi Zuchowski added 4, and senior Dani Hunt and sophomore Bailey Monks each chipped in a point.

Poirier pulled down 6 rebounds and made 3 steals, Brought and Hunt had 4 rebounds each and Brought also added 4 steals and 2 assists. Zuchowski added 5 rebounds and Manning and Monks each recorded blocks.

Towanda's Erin Barrett also finished with 17 points on the night for the Lady Knights.

Towanda's JV team edged Wellsboro 37-33 to end the young Lady Hornets' three-game win streak and drop them to 4-6 overall. Sophomore Kiyah Boyce scored 9 points.

The win improves the Varsity team's record to 6-7 overall and gives them sole possession of first place in the NTL Large School Division at 6-2. The girls will be back on the court on Thursday, January 17 at home against Wyalusing.
