The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team improved to 2-0 with a 15-8 win in a back-and-forth game against the Troy Lady Trojans on Tuesday, April 6.

"We were happy to get a big win against a very energized Troy team," said head coach Ron Brought. "I was very proud of our girls for never letting up. We stress speed and aggressive tactics with base running and tonight we pushed the limits in every inning. We have a lineup of girls that have a lot of power but tonight they took what was there by hitting 17 singles. Their relentless hitting kept the pressure on Troy the entire game. All of this lead to scoring multiple runs in 5 of the 7 innings. It's still early and we have work to do but these girls are making strong improvements every time they step on the field."

The Lady Hornets scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st only to have the Trojans score 3 runs of their own to make it a one-run game. Wellsboro then padded their lead with 3 more runs in the top of the 2nd on an RBI single by senior Jena Boyce and an 2-run double by junior Emma Coolidge to make it 7-3. Troy clawed their way back with a run in the bottom of the 3rd and then 3 more in the bottom of the 4th on a 3-run home run by Tyra Williams to tie the game up at 7-all.

Senior Jessa Lohr scored on a Rylie Boyce triple and junior Olivia Servatius drove in a run in the top of the 5th to put Wellsboro back up 9-7. The Lady Hornets then added 6 more runs over the final 2 innings, 4 in the top of the 6th and 2 in the top of the 7th, while holding Troy to just one more run, to pick up the win.

Jena Boyce had a record-setting afternoon, going 5-for-5 at the plate with 4 runs scored to put her 1st all-time in Wellsboro Softball history. Senior Kerrah Clymer, Coolidge, and sophomore Jordyn Abernathy all went 3-for-5 at the plate, Lohr and sophomore Rylie Boyce were both 2-for-4, and Servatius and sophomore Madaline Bordas added base hits. Lohr, Bordas, Boyce, Coolidge, and Abernathy scored 2 runs each and Clymer also scored.

Coolidge and Rylie Boyce also had 4-RBI afternoons.

Clymer went the distance on the mound for Wellsboro as she earned her 2nd win of the season by striking out 10, walking 4, while giving up 12 hits (2 doubles, 2 home runs) and 8 runs against 38 batters.

Wellsboro (2-0, 2-0 NTL Large School Division) are back in action on Thursday, April 8 at North Penn-Liberty.
