Craig, Gao, Cotner head all-region swim teamsIt was a big year for area swimmers, and now it's time to recognize the areas best with this year's The Daily & Sunday Review All-Region swim teams.

For the girls Molly Craig is the swimmer of the year. Craig was a state medalist in two events this year, and has the regions fastest time in six of the eight individual swimming events.

The girls' newcomer of the year is Cathryn Brought of Wellsboro. Brought had a pair of runner-up finishes at districts and just missed qualifying for states.

The diver of the year is Abigail Thoman of Athens, who posted the best scores in the region this year and was fourth at districts.

This year we added a relay of the year and that was Notre Dame's 200 medley relay of Molly and Catherine Craig, Emily Schmidt and Caroline Rogers, which won the Class C title at sectionals this year.

For the boys Jeffrey Gao of Athens and Nathan Cotner of Wellsboro were each state qualifiers in multiple events and share the All-Region boys' swimmer of the year honors.

Towanda's John Schrader was fifth at districts and is the diver of the year, while Wellsboro's Brennan Warner had a strong freshman year to earn newcomer of the year honors.

The Athens' 400 free relay team of Gao, Shawn Shaw, Rohnin Bishop and Andrew Juhola had a second-place finish at districts and they are the relay of the year.

All-Region is chosen by the fastest time in each event. This year a swimmer can only make one of the three teams (first, second or third) as an individual. They can be on that specific team for as many events as they qualify for, and they can be on an individual event on one team and a relay on another team.

For the girls on the first team Molly Craig earns the nod in the 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 back, 100 fly and 200 IM. Catherine Craig is on the first team in the 100 breaststroke and Brought is on the first team in the 50 free. Thoman is the first-team diver.
