Athens, Sullivan earn softball wins.

Athens defeated Troy 8-3 in NTL softball action Tuesday.

The game was called due to snow after six innings.

The Wildcats scored in the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead, then stretched it to 7-0 after the top of the fifth.

The Trojans struck back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, while both teams got a run in the sixth.

Haley Barry led Athens at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and 2-RBI while Mimi Martin was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored.

Emma Repsher, Meg Bennett and Morgan McCutcheon also had hits.

Emma Adams scored three times for the Wildcats with Haleigh Macik also crossing home.

Harley Sullivan, Leah Reid and McCutcheon each had an RBI.

Bennett got the win, striking out three while allowing 11 hits, one walk and three earned runs.

The Trojans out hit Athens 11-8 as Vanessa Watson (2-for-3), Riley McClellan (2-for-3), Nicole Spalding (2-for-3) and Brianna Rathbun (2-for-3) all had multi-hit games.

Madison Alexander had a double for Troy while Erika Johnston and Nicole McClellan also had hits.

Watson, Riley McClellan and Rathbun scored the three Troy runs while Johnston had 2-RBI and Nicole McClellan knocked in one.

Watson went 4 1/3-innings for the loss, allowing seven hits, two walks and seven runs, three of them earned.

Caitlyn Hoffmann went the final 1 2/3-innings, allowing one hit, one walk and one earned run.

Sullivan County 27, Benton 14, 6 innings

While neither school has a football team the softball teams gave their fans a football score.

The Griffins turned a back and forth game into a rout thanks to a 14-run top of the sixth.

They led 5-3 after the first inning then pushed the lead to 11-4 with three runs in the second and third.

A 3-run fourth brought Benton back in it. Sullivan countered with two runs in the fifth but a 6-run bottom half of the inning from the Tigers tied the game at 13-all.

Then in the sixth Sullivan ended it with two touchdowns.

The Griffins had 24 hits on the day as four players had four hit games.

Kassandra Houseknecht (4-for-5), Jaeden Patson (4-for-6), Mykenzie Malacusky (4-for-6) and Alexis Randalls (4-for-5) combined for 16-for-22 on the day.

Houseknecht's included a triple, three runs and 3-RBI, Patson had two doubles, three runs and 3-RBI, Malacusky had a double, five runs and 4-RBI and Randall had three runs and an RBI.

Quincy Fry (3-for-6) also had a big game with a double, triple, four runs and an RBI.

Jessica King (2-for-5) had a multi-hit game as well with three runs and 2-RBI. Samantha Albright, Leona Hatch and Savannah Baldwin also had hits.

Madison Burke scored three times, Baldwin added two runs and Albright crossed home once.

Burke started and went 3 1/3-innings for the no decision, striking out three while allowing four hits, six walks and seven runs, five of them earned.

Malacusky finished the final 2 2/3-innings, striking out two while allowing five hits, five walks and seven earned runs.

Baseball

Athens 4, Troy 3, Susp. 5th inning

The Wildcats led after five innings when the game was called due to weather.

It was tied at 1-1 after three innings when Athens scored three runs in the top of the fourth.

Troy chipped away with runs in the fourth and fifth before the game was called.

The game will be finished out at a later date.
